TURNING UPSIDE DOWN
The first three postures in this chapter are inverted postures, which means just what it sounds likeâwe turn upside down. In addition to balancing left and right, and forward and backward, it is also important to balance standing upright with being upside down. One of my racing Siberian huskies, Nellie, loves to lie on the couch, turn upside down, and prop all four of her legs up the back of the couch. Turning upside down is good for usâwe see animals doing it all the time.
Turning upside down is an invigorating and restorative way to drain tension and toxins from the legs, the lower torso, and the major organs, and to assist with venous blood return to the heart. According to yogic thought, turning upside down helps to dislodge pollutants that get stuck in the dark corners of the liver, lungs, intestines, and so on, and clears out mental cobwebs. But before you go to a yoga class and get too excited about jumping into a headstand when you see someone else doing so, keep in mind that there are contraindications for many of the inverted postures, such as handstand, shoulderstand, and headstand.
If you have TBI (traumatic brain injury), untreated high blood pressure, detached retina, any eye condition where increased pressure would be dangerous, neck injuries or misalignments, low back injuries or misalignment, are on the first day of a heavy menstrual cycle, or have any questions at all about whether or not you should be doing any inverted postures (be they in this book or not), it is best not to do them at all. Instead, just lie down with your butt up against a wall and your legs up the wall. A nice substitute that is also very safe.
